I don't get this whole anti horse slaughter crap, especially from people who are shoving a hamburger in their mouth while crying about it.
What makes a horse more precious than a cow, chicken, rabbit, or any other animal MOST people indulge in?
Let's look at some videos.....Here is how horses were slaughtered in the US plants before the plants were shut down. Horse slaughter video, .wmv file. What's so Godawful about that? The horses are standing quietly in line. Ok, there's a few seconds of terror before the bolt gun comes into play but what horse has NOT gone through a few seconds of terror whether is the non trailer loader or simply one of those horses that get all panicky if their feed bowl is in a new place.
Now if you've watched this video and are freaking out "OMG OMG those poor poor precious horses!".....let's meet our beef....Kosher slaughter.....mmmmm, bacon.....Chicken nugget anyone?
Yeah, these video's are bad, they are from PETA, worse of the worse...but my point is these animals don't look very happy to end up on a plate either, so what's the difference?
You want to become a vegetarian? Go for it....I kinda like my big fat juicy T-Bones thankyouverymuch!
Like it or not horses ARE livestock...not pets! They are classified under federal regulations as LIVESTOCK!
Do you know what happened to horses when they were injured or killed in war? THEY ATE THEM! Same with Old Bunny the family field plow machine. No, you won't see that on Little House on The Prairie, but it's just how it was.
Personally I would LOVE to lobby to make horse meat readily available in the USA. It's the leanest meat out there, wonderful sweet flavor and it's pretty damn good for you actually. I'd have no problem adding it to my regular diet.

Tarra, sorry but in my humble opinion comparing a child to a horse makes you an idiot in my book. Yes, I own horses, all of which were rescues, along with several other animals...hard for you to wrap your little pea brain around huh? :)

To me it is the same, as I am a kid myself (I am 14) and I feel that my animals are all part of my family.

Hey Tarra, no hard feelings, sorry for jumping you. There are actually people out there that are so radical anti slaughter that they put a horses life above a humans and I think that's sick.

I think of my critters as family too to a certain extent...

Oh, and for the record, I find the comment about Special Olympics to be disheartening at best. (I happened to see it just before posting my question) My nephew has been a proud participant for 3 years. He is not retarded but in fact extremely intelligent and a wonderful athlete!

Good advice, Buc. I've wanted to take my thoughts back to paper for some time and I've seen some real pretty journals in the stores lately! Besides, those old lock and key diaries were about as secure as an ISP - any big brother could pick the locks and expose secrets to the entire world. (Generalization, nothing to do with your blog.)
Anyway, apologies for leaving the rude "animal" comment on your page. Everyone is entitled to their opinion just as anyone is entitled to disagree. If however a rude, opinionated stranger snuck into my space in the middle of the night with any deal up his sleeve -I'd be a hell of a lot less gracious than you were!

Another honest question for you. What's your primary reason for being pro-slaughter? Especially the run 'em through by the hundreds captive bolt slaughter? I grew up around horses, lots of them. When any became sick or injured beyond help - or just old, tired and given up, my dad or granddad would put a gun to their head. It ripped my heart out every time, and granddad swore against it, but I saw him shed a tear or two. When granddad returned from his long walk, he'd always take me up on his lap, give me a lemon drop and say, "Honey, it's better than the glue factory". The thing is, they went fast, surrounded by the comfort of familier faces and surroundings. See, I have my reasons for being anti-slaughter. They go way back! I honestly want to understand pro-slaughter, especially from the views of horse owners. I'm not so naive to question the big bucks of the "business". I think many people at the top of huge corporate ladders arrived by stepping on people. I've known a few. But horse owners, or small-change kill buyers? I just don't get it.

I'm actually going to blog in the next few days about why I am so Pro slaughter, so if you don't mind I will answer your question a lot better then.
But I'll give you a brief on the main 2 reasons I feel like I do....
First, whether people will accept it or not, horses have been eaten for years..it really wasn't until the automobile that horsemen became horse-people and it has gotten worse over the years.
#2, when the slaughter plants were open and in full force horses were worth something. I attend a lot of auctions and now any idiot can own a horse for $20 bucks...
I will be blogging on an expanded version soon though. Thank you for the reasonable questions.
Sorry charlie, but you blew it. I can't poke fun at you on my blog now. You have shown me that you can be one of the reasonable people, where we can agree to disagree and also find a little common ground in the middle.
I'm sure we can still find plenty to slap each other around with, but it sure does make for a better debate when we can lay off the personal attacks and just stick to our views ;)

Pro-slaughter or not, thanks for choosing to like me. I appreciate that! Agreeing to disagree in a spirit of kindness is a rare gift -especially after I jumped down your throat. That says a lot!
I do want to look at pro-slaughter from several angles. One of my dearest family members is pro-slaughter but we don't go there for obvious reasons. (She means more to me than her "too many" horses.)
When you come right down to it, people are people. We're all basically created with the same "humanness", especially horse people, with the exception perhaps of those who can't see past the animal for ill-legal-tender. I won't change my personal convictions, but I'm open because I want to understand. Agreeing to disagree over a cup of coffee and apple pie would do this world a whole lot of good, in my humble opinion.
Reason #1 - Basically translates too many domestic horses, right? This is a problem with no easy solution, I agree. Maybe the worthless government involved, i.e. Fed. Agriculture AND the "business" CEOs need a little more public prodding towards the meanings of humane and safety. This would all boil down to money though. And power.
OK, so can you enlighten me about the consumption of horse meat in early US history? My initial thoughts would be the desperate or poor, and tribal tradition. What about present US culture? Unless I've missed something, horses are companion and sport animals. To my knowledge, the horse is the only agricultural animal that's never been on the food market (with the exception of crooked govt. mis-marketing.)
Reason #2 - US slaughter plants running full-force - horses were worth something. To whom, exactly? The initial buyers I suppose. What bothers me about this end of the business comes from personal experience. Theft and cover-up. I'm not accusing anyone here, I don't KNOW anyone here. My elderly great-aunt sold her arabians to a "wonderful young couple". Legal. Signed, sealed, delivered - and slaughtered. I've also witnessed a hell of a lot of unlawful auction sales and procedures, not to mention unethical. OK, so I need more apple pie and coffee. Sorry. What are your thoughts about "behind-the-scenes" happenings at auction.
#2b - Any idoit can own a horse for 20 bucks. True. But what about the non-idiots who actually provide a good, long-term home? Would you throw that cup of coffee in my face if I outbid you by 10 bucks for my Equine Therapy business - for my nephew, his buddies and a hundred more like him?
Lastly: Mustangs. I'll stop with that one word because if I say anything more - God forbid it'll be emotional. And I'll begin speaking in Sailor dialect. *&^$*%$@&*#+~& !!! :P
