Due to the threats and harassment by radical zealots who call themselves "rescue groups" these horses are no longer available.
I tried to do something half way descent but was only met with threats and criticism. Thank you for the 3 am "Horse Killer" calls and the email threats. I'm just not going to deal with this. The last straw was that "Animal Planet" garbage on ABF.
Thanks to the rational people here that truly wanted to help, but the wackaloons came out in bigger forces. It's just not worth it. I was volunteering my time, along with a couple of other girls. I don't care how mad anyone gets at me but I am not going to put others in jeapordy......

I just love these damned backyard breeders. …
What in the world did he think these multiplying horses would be good for, or who did he think he could ever sell them to, IF HE NEVER BOTHERED TO HANDLE/GENTLE THEM??
And because this guy didn't have a brain in his head, the rest of us, BUC, are now supposed to wish Cavel was still open? We're supposed to think, "Well, hell, what do you expect this poor guy and his poor horses to do now? Euthanasia on his farm?? Hell, no! Just because IT NEVER OCCURRED to the single synapse roaming around in this guy's skull to PLAN FOR HIS ANIMALS, he shouldn't have to shell out THAT kind of money. He should GET PAID BY THE KB FOR HIS COMPLETE IRRESPONSIBILITY."
Slaughter – the last resort of the unspeakably stupid.
I honestly expect you to believe whatever you want to believe.
But the cold hard truth is this isn't the ONLY guy in the world like this. No, the horses will not be euthanized. They will be sold and depending who buys them will be the outcome. Those are the FACTS.
Horses are classified under Federal regulations as livestock. You are not going to convince some people any different. Especially if they are of the older generation.
I do not disagree that this is a crock of shit in these cases, but like I said, it's not as uncommon as some think.
He also could have reached out to NO one and let the horses rot and die in the field....I could have told him to F off when I was alerted....
I don't expect anyone, including myself, to think "poor guy". If that's what you got out of this then it went over your head....and I mean that with all due respect :)
BUC: You know this guy, and you know a lot of people like him. And although he maintained these horses without much in the way of forethought, they have been, and currently are, being well fed and cared for. (Well ... other than that little issue of "training.") Now that he is in a bind, he has decided to contact you (and, likely, others) to see if he can sell these horses before he moves ahead, some six weeks hence, with the offer he has received from a killer. What do you think this type of person will do with his or her horses if and when slaughter is no longer an option. And I'm talking about people like this guy - not people who have a history, or a likely leaning toward, animal abuse and/or starvation.
I can't answer that question. I don't believe anyone can. I do know for the last 10 years I have driven by this place several times and never even realized there was a horse on the place.
This isn't a money situation, he's not loosing his farm. He's old and is feeling the effects.
I do think that if the only options come down to owner responsibility, what you will see less and less of it.
Not all abusers are born that way, some are made over time.
Hey, I am a member of the FOB board although I don't post much. I have to agree with you that there are a ton of rescues out there that are not "rescues". And the folks that run alot of them have very little knowledge and do get in over their heads. Yup, it costs money to take care of horses!
I don't believe in slaughter, you do, that's our right! I do look at my horses as companion animals and not as livestock. You don't, again, that's ok! Again, it's our right!
I did want to comment on your morgan. What a good looking animal and a nice looking morgan! I don't know if they are still trying to register the "morgans" that are crossed with saddlebreds, what a farce. They aren't even CLOSE to looking like a nice morgan! They look like a cross with a saddlebred!! Narrow chest, long legs...NOT a morgan by any means! Your "pony" is gorgeous, though. Built like a morgan should be! Nice to see they are still out there!
Ok, now back to your regularly scheduled show... ;-)

(Who is antislaughter, but pays for her horses upkeep by working a day job!)
Those of us that are pro slaughter are so because there are many horses raised as livestock and treated as livestock. They are raised in herds and have little human handling such as these broodmares BUC posted about.
When will these people figure out not ALL horses are someone's back yard pets? Some are business only.
Remove slaughter, remove a last chance sale to a KB and YES - more horses will starve to death.
According to one study the main reasons for horse neglect and abuse is owner ignorance - the second is financial hardship. How does banning slaughter address either situation?
Please show me all the instances where animal control moved in quickly and saved the horses? It is usually long and drawn out and in many instances the abuser keeps the horses. WHY? Because most counties and states are not set up for confiscating large livestock. They don't have the facilities or the financing.
When will anti-slaughter get their heads out of the sand and get a clue? NO, you guys don't get IT! You live in a fantasy world where you think if slaughter is banned all the mean and nasty horse owners will become warm and fluffy and responsible.
Maybe you could ask him what he would do. Or ask someone like him. You've acknowledged you know lots like him.
Because if the people who oppose slaughter could find out what these types of owners would need (if slaughter was not an option), then those are the needs we can all focus on meeting - whether its pursuing an expansion of county animal control services, creating a national list of county-specific euthanasia options and rendering plants, etc., etc.
I don't know what the etc., etc. would be because I don't know what these types of people are thinking. Maybe you can find that out.
To suggest that "owner responsibility" is the expectation or answer doesn't really go far enough - we have to figure out all of the things that "owner responsibility" means -then go to those places to help.
And, as you probably know, animal abusers are generally made during the abuser's childhood. The fellow with the 10 mares and the colt doesn't strike me as the type that would become an abuser if slaughter was not an option.
